Library Policies

Mission and Vision

Mission and Vision

CVUSD Libraries adhere to and support the district and school's mission and vision.

Circulation

  • 14-day Check Out. Books and eBooks may be checked out for 14 days.
  • Renewals. Books may be renewed for additional days at the Circulation Desk or in the user's Destiny account online.
  • Holds. Books may be placed on hold in the user's Destiny account. If not picked up in 5 days, held books are returned to the stacks. Teachers may place longer holds on books, particularly for books used in Literature Circles. The library retrieves holds lists from Destiny in the morning and puts the books on the holds shelf for pick up, typically within one day.
  • Student accounts. Students may check their accounts online or at the circulation desk for items checked out or on hold.
  • Self-check out. Students may check out or renew books at a self-checkout kiosk in the library.

Donations. No Fines Policy

To encourage worry-free reading and shared responsibility for the library,

  • There are no fines for overdue, lost or damaged books.
  • Accidents happen. If you lose or damage a book, we suggest a $30 donation to the library per book (Cost+processing). If you are unable to donate at this time, please still let us know so that we can remove the copy from the catalog and add the title to our future purchases wish list.
  • We do not accept replacement copies. The library acquires books in specific formats, editions, and with certain technical processing pre-applied. Monetary donations are strongly preferred.

Food in the Library

Food is permitted in the library.

Drinks that are in cups with lids are permitted in the library. Soda cans and cups without lids are not permitted in the library.

Cleaning wipes are available at the front desk.

Students who bring food and drink into the library are expected to volunteer 2 hours per semester for the privilege. This is an honor system among CVHS students to keep the library sparkling.

Behavior Expectations

To ensure appropriate behavior and maintain a positive learning environment in the library all students are expected to:

  • Respect others (quiet voices, including group work, no disruptive behavior)

  • Respect library staff and their instructions

  • Respect library books and the freedom to read

  • Respect the space (furniture, equipment, displays)

  • Demonstrate positive digital citizenship at all times

  • Sit at chairs and tables within and up to the library capacity (1 student = 1 chair, 1 table = max. 6 students)

  • Respect library volunteers and assistants who control library capacity during peak times (ins and outs) and their instructions

Consequences for Misbehavior

  • Warning

  • Loss of library privileges for the day and referral to principal

  • Loss of library privileges for the week and referral to principal

  • Digital access only

  • Repair costs for damaged equipment or furniture

    • Send students with their cell phone and/or laptop to check in at the library via QR code/link.
    • Students must have an academic purpose. Please send sick students to the health office; send students needing wellness support or de-escalation support to the Wellness Center.

Technology Access and Use

Learning in the digital age requires

  • regular access to the internet and computers
  • audiovisual hardware and software
  • content integrations with publishers
  • software integrations between library management systems (LMS), learning management systems (LMS), student information systems (SIS) and financial systems (AP/AR)

Through the CVHS Library, students and staff have access to wifi, loaner laptops, recharging stations, printers, podium, speakers, microphone and digital displays.

Access to curated digital content is provided through the hybrid print-and-digital library which operates an integrated, cloud-hosted, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) suite:

  • Library Management System (LMS) (Destiny Discover)
  • Content and Events Management System (CMS) (Springshare LibApps)

Students gain access to library accounts, subscription databases and other published content through the LMS-CMS and their Google Classrooms. Access to databases varies by publisher and is described for each database in the A-Z list on the library homepage.

Library technologies are provided as educational tools for students and staff for teaching and learning. Class and coursework related use of this equipment takes priority.

Lost and Found

The lost and found at the library does not serve an academic purpose and, as such, is a bonus service provided at the library. Staff time is kept to a minimum addressing questions. The library has limited space to manage a lost and found operation and will reduce the size of it from time to time.

Please do not call the library about lost items. Visit in person.

  • Students should visit the lost and found in person to look for their items.
  • Students, teachers and families from other schools should contact their coaches or CVHS sponsors and ask them to find any lost sports, technology or other equipment.

Please look for and pick up your items promptly.

  • Lost items are placed in the "lost and found" box at the front of the library.
  • Technology items (earbuds, laptops, cell phones), keys, money and eyeglasses are put behind the library circulation desk. Inquire there.
  • Money or gift cards that are unclaimed after 1 week are given to the person who kindly turned them in.

No Liability

CVHS staff, including library staff and TAs, are not liable for any damage or loss to items while held in the "lost and found" and are not responsible for retrieving or compensating for items that have been freecycled.

Freecycle

In the last three weeks of school, all items that remain in the Lost and Found must be moved out of the Library. Items are given away in freecycle events and then shipped to charities in the last week. Keys are thrown away.

No Storage

Lost items are not stored or held in the library over the summer as they present a liability to the rest of the library equipment and collections.
